The Granada Theatre: Where History Meets Modern Entertainment

Experience the charm and historical significance of The Granada Theatre, a landmark at the heart of downtown Mt. Vernon's cultural scene. Built in 1937 by the Boller Brothers Architects, this theatre, known as “The Crown Jewel of Southern Illinois,” was designed to seat 1,200 people in an art deco auditorium with air conditioning, offering a comfortable and luxurious entertainment experience. Over the years, The Granada has hosted a wide array of events, from Big Band, Blues, Country, and Rock & Roll shows to live theater events, birthday parties, and movie screenings, establishing itself as a center of entertainment for decades.

The theatre has evolved and reinvented itself while preserving its historic character. In 1981, it was transformed into a dual theatre with a beveled screen, and in 1985, a famous mural was painted in the lobby, adding another artistic dimension to the premises. After closing in 1993, The Granada was handed over to the city, sparking a community-led initiative in 2002 to "Save the Granada." This effort led to fundraising and restoration, culminating in the establishment of the Granada Center for the Performing Arts in 2003, which purchased the building from the city.

Following a complete renovation of the lobby and both storefronts in October 2019, and the auditorium's restoration in September 2020, The Granada Theatre has been revitalized, thanks to the community's dedication and contribution of over $350,000 in donated money, materials, and volunteer hours. Today, The Granada Theatre stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit.

The Granada Theatre continues to serve as an eclectic venue, hosting a variety of events and performances, including weddings, office parties, concerts, fashion shows, and much more. With a capacity of 912 (adjustable depending on event needs), it offers two full-service bars, a professional sound and light system, a large, retractable screen with a projector, and all the necessary amenities like chairs, tables, and linens to make your event a success. The theatre is available for rent hourly, seven days a week, and remains committed to enlivening downtown Mt. Vernon with art, culture, and celebration.
